It's not possible for the website to do it by itself.

The only reason you see targeted ads for merchandise you recently looked at is because a lot of websites use the same advertising network and they all see the same cookies stored on your computer.

It was (is still?) possible to (kind of) do this.

The website just needs to have links to all your competitors somewhere small so that the visitor does not see them.
You can then run client side javascript to check which "color" the links have. Already visited links are in a different shade of blue as unvisited links. Which means that sites you had visited before could be found out this way, but I believe browser vendors fixed that a year ago or so.
