I'm interested to see if anyone has a solution as well.

I haven’t found a better solution yet, but I will say that once you start pulling from three trays, the run time increases significantly.
running a C4080 with Creo software.
My current workflow for this type of job is to use Montax to handle the numbering and imposition, then print each paper
type separately and collate everything afterward on a standalone collator.

since I haven't had a Creo RIP since the early 2000s... I'm unsure how they operate these days. So there are no mixed-media options? No "book printing" mode where you can select a different media for the front & back of a book? How about inserts? Preprint the CF back sheet and run it as an insert?

Guys, this is very simple once you have file setup correctly.
  1. Use InDesign to create a 3 page file (for triplicate), placing the background content on each page.
  2. Setup an Excel spreadsheet to contain the numbering you wish to use, e.g. 00100, 00101 etc, save this spreadsheet as a Tab delimited text file
  3. Use the Mail Merge function within InDesign to select the Tab Delimited file from above add the variable field onto each of the three pages in InDesign.
  4. From the Mail Merge tab, export the PDF (so if 100 records, you will now have a 3000 page PDF)
  5. Import this PDF into Creo
  6. Open the Creo job ticket for this file, and select the paper for the first page as the main stock
  7. Now within the Job ticket go down to the Services tab, then "Split to Sets", turn this on and set to 3 pages
  8. Now go to Exceptions tab and add an exception for Page 2 to be the middle stock of the triplicate, then add another exception for Page 3 to be the third stock type
  9. Load the 3 stocks and job will run collated as desired
Note the "Split to Sets" feature tells the Creo to repeat the exceptions every 3 sheets, so you therefore only have to program the first set.
