Quartz filters and smooth shading

Is anyone using Apple's Quartz filters to automatically generate low-resolution PDF files and/or thumbnail images? I have the problem that the filter chokes on smooth shadings and leaves them out of the generated PDF or JPEG. I don't know why this is happening, but since our client's logo includes a smooth shade, it's something of a deal-breaker.

I did find someone mentioning that Quartz doesn't support smooth shading at all, but that was back in 2001. Is this still true?
