The retail industry is undergoing a transformation due to the “Amazon Effect”: expectations of instantaneous delivery, free shipping, free returns and various delivery options: purchase online or in store and delivered to home, BOPIS (buy online and pick up in store), or delivery to lockers or other locations.

Retailers are also recognizing the buying power of the millennial generation (ages 24-39)—growing up in a world of the Internet, social media and smart devices, and preferring digital shopping & payment methods. This group makes more than 54% of its purchases online.

One key growth area seems to be with online grocery. Online grocery sales are estimated to grow from $23.9 billion in 2018 to $59.5 billion by 2023. Major grocery stores & Walmart already offer home delivery or BOPIS service. Fulfillment logistics in retail are now far more complex and costly as businesses struggle to meet the different delivery options, higher volume & small orders—not so different than the challenges faced by the printing industry. Most retailers are also faced with challenges of fulfillment logistics by their current infrastructure. Instead of a single point of contact in the store, they now must manage online orders, in-store pickup and home deliveries.

Enter: portable label printers—let’s refer to them as devices, as they are more than just printers. These devices can streamline the retailer’s order fulfillment process, from item picking & sorting to identifying orders for pickup or delivery. These devices improve productivity by printing UPC barcodes, mark downs, itemizing orders and printing other labels or receipts on-the-spot. Labels can be made at the exact moment of application, without adding extra cycles into their workflow, meeting supply chain schedules and time-sensitive factors surrounding perishable goods.

Retailers and food delivery / pickup, can also use these portable devices to identify orders or receipts, in the field. Most retailers realize the importance of adapting to the eCommerce era and are investing in technologies that improve their overall efficiency & customer satisfaction.
