Separating Black screen from solid

Hello,

I have a flat file that has a solid black background and a greyscale image in the center. The greyscale image is feathered into the black background. I need to separate the image from the background making one a spot black. So at the end I will print the image on two plates both printing black one plate with the screens and one plate with the solid. I am having trouble due to the feathered edge.

Hi error19, you haven't mentioned what kind of file it is. PDF? INDD? PSD?

Is this an electronic file, or a stripped flat?
