Sourcing Service Manuals

Just curious where people get their service manuals from. Recently had a "technician" come out to work on our ColorMax8, and while chatting with him I learned he is actually only trained on postage/mail machines, and to work on the ColorMax8 he just reads the service manual and DMs Formax. Got me thinking, wtf am I paying for - any competent/technically inclined person can do that! (But I do understand the liability/cost reasons that a service contract can provide). I tried to cajole him to give me a copy of the service manual but he was scared of getting in trouble.

Got me wondering if there's a shady russian website or something I can go to find service manuals for my various equipment. I'd love to have them on hand, as I have competent staff members and would really only attempt to do things beyond our skill level when absolutely necessary. I also have been playing with making my own AI models and thought it might be neat to train one on all the service manuals for my equipment and see how much it helps/hallucinates.

I see in this forum occasionally that people say "DM me for manual" or whatnot, so I suspect there is some sort of gray market for these. I'm not asking for sources or direct links, don't want to get anyone in trouble. But general discussion regarding this topic would be appreciated. Curious minds want to learn!

I have not found a repository of service manuals, but they do cross my radar sporadically. A number of vendors keep their manuals and technician notes in propriety encrypted apps.
