WaterBased Coating Vs Varnish

Dears,

Can you please explain what is the differences between Varnish and WaterBase Coating , We are printing and packaging company and we need to know more about coating

what I know is
- Varnish is printing with plate same as ink we use it to coat boxes
- WaterBase is used with special unit and need special blanket and if we need to uncoate some places we cut the blanket

but I really want to under stand the real difference to choose which one to use and weather varnish can take the place of waterbase coating or not

Varnish is an ink without any pigment, so clear.
It's body is very long and loose.
Varnish gets applied thru the ink train, plate, and blanket.
It dries like an ink and may need spray powder and maybe shorter delivery rack/tray to prevent setoff, blocking.

Waterbase (WB) or Aqueous (AQ) coating is a fluid/liquid and gets applied thru a special unit. Old style is rubber roller, new style is anilox roll (like flexo).
Because it's like floor wax (60% water?) it dries very quickly.
It's much thicker so has better rub/scratch resistances and gloss.
The offset blanket needs to be hydrophilic (water loving).
You can flood coat (overall) or spot coat (knockout/dropout) with a cut packing, cut blanket, or relief plate (flexo).

can we use Water Based coating with offset unit even without water for over all coating or it will not work

no it wont work. WB needs heat and air to dry and was not made to go into an ink duct. Varnish will go into and inking system but beware of allowing it to sit on the rollers too long or you will get very familiar with removing and scrubbing your rollers not sure if these guys can help you out good

Ironically, your provided link to Kentucky Shine leads to a list of their WB AQ coatings that are designed to run in an offset press’s ink train. I’ve used them before, and while being more difficult to run than WB AQ in an inline coater, they do actually work.

That Kentucky shine works very well as long as your anal about making sure you spray down the rollers for even the slightest period of down time!!!
