I know Rorohiko Ltd. has InDesignProxy for determining the version of InDesign, but is there something similar out there for Illustrator? And free?

If you're talking about determining the version of Illustrator a particular file was created with, just crack that sucker open in textedit or whatever. It should be very near the top; do a search for "creator" if you're having trouble finding it. Examples:

<xap:CreatorTool>Adobe Illustrator CS3</xap:CreatorTool>
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 8.0

Adobe had a free app to do this back before OSX came out. I've seen nothing since then to. BBEdit will do it as splenguin posted.

If you open the document, Illustrator will warn you if the doc is an older version. It will give you the option to lock the text as it is, or to let it reflow to the current version of Illustrator. Of course, there is no guarantee of text looking the same as on the original without comparing yours to their pdf.;)
