What's a Page?

Seriously, trying to explain this concept in a fool-proof way makes my brain hurt. It especially matters when someone wants a quote and you find out later that when they said 170 pages they really meant 170 sheets printed double-sided.

And it seems like every print shop explains it differently.

We try to explain it as sheets vs. pages but that sometimes gets confusing as soon as you have a fold and staple book that needs 4 pages per sheet instead of 2 pages per sheet.
IE. A flyer is always a single sheet of paper that can have one page (single-sided) or two pages (double-sided) printed on it.

I'd love to know how other shops explain this.

Here in Australia, we usually refer to it as "pp." Printed pages.

So for books we state 24pp + Cover which is 28 printed pages.

Flyers are either 1pp (single-sided) or 2pp (double-sided)

It gets harder when bound books are say 170 pages printed single-sided (so 170 sheets of paper), or double-sided which would be 85 sheets.

Then there is an A4, folded to DL brochure which we refer to as a 6pp DL Brochure.
