According to Bloomberg, Xerox Corp., which plans to separate into two companies by the end of the year, is in talks to acquire R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co.

According to people with knowledge of the matter, Xerox would acquire R.R. Donnelley and merge some of it with its copier, printer and related-services business and the rest with its smaller business process outsourcing services, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private.

According to those people, the talks are at an early stage. A deal could be announced before Xerox’s split is completed. Both R.R. Donnelley and Xerox stock climbed on the news.

Mmmmm. I get the M&A advantages from both companies, but, I wonder if Xerox, who sells digital production press equipment to printers and mail houses has considered the consequences. RRD is one of the largest print & mail businesses in the world. I'd have to think about whether or not I would buy equipment from a company that is basically in competition with me. Something to consider.....................

My thoughts are that Xerox is really only interested in the financial services arm of RRD; the one that is currently being split off as a separate company. I don't think Xerox has any interest in becoming a commercial print service provider, do they?

Xerox already IS a print service provider - as Xerox Global Services.

Most of Xerox's print services are BPO (Business Process Outsource) oriented. For instance, here in Florida, Xerox recently won the contract to handle all the customer service (CSR, Phone Centers, Print & Mail) for the State Of Florida highway toll system (SunPass, E-Pass, etc.). Even though part of their process will entail the printing and mailing of toll collection notices to violators, I don't really consider that as being in competition with my company, or, any typical print service provider.

Funny you should mention this cuz . . . true story - We used to have an Indigo and a customer, SIEMANS, that built MRI machines here in town. We were printing their product guide books, color/bnw wire bindings and were doing a good volume with them every month. The Xerox went to them and proposed that they would, at no cost to Siemans, put in a shop that would be capable of producing said books. They said yes and there went our business with them. Xerox sales people came in trying to sell us some of their machines and right before I showed them the door I asked . . . are you a industry supplier or a competitor . . they said industry supplier and I asked about their in-plant at Seimans . . . the sales arm didn't even know about it - well long story short, siemans moved out of town about a year later but it took xerox another 8 or 9 years to get back in our door . . . could be on the way out again!

Well, okay, fine. Others do. I personally have been involved with several large scale projects where the service provider was faced with either buying equipment from Xerox or using Xerox Global Services instead. Interestingly, XGS used Kodak equipment to provide the service in one case, and Fujitsu equipment in another case. My point was simply that Xerox is in both the business of selling equipment and also offering services that happen to include printing. They offer all sorts of services besides printing ( like mailing, list processing, billing, involve processing and mailing ) so, perhaps your customers are not companies like the US Dept of State of Farmers Insurance. All I was conveying is that this is not some so far fetched.

as it turns out, it was more a of an attempt by RRD trying to gulp down Xerox type of play after all the dust settled, and that was not going to happen. Jeff Jacobson would never want to be part of that !
