You Want Silver on That?
By Noel Ward, Editor@Large
It used to be that some of the most demanded—and compelling—embellishments to printed pages took a few extra steps of manual labor to accomplish. A common one was adding silver to a page. Yet for many years adding metallic silver to a page was not an option on digitally-printed sheets. Now the universe has changed and adding the gleam of silver to a page is faster, easier, and adds the allure of profitability to jobs that once might have left for other shops.
I have often thought of such embellishments as occasional options but have found them important in almost every shop, owners eager to take on jobs requiring such enhancements. Although I remain personally unimpressed by substrates laden with silver there is an undeniable market for it. Doing this with a digital printer could be challenging.
Still, printers in commercial print, direct mail, packaging and label spaces have often used embellishments such as silver foil to give applications a high-level design look and feel. It's a feature print service providers have used to upsell traditional applications while attracting a premium price. As my colleague was quick to point out all those years ago, no digital presses could add glitter and gleam of silver foil. Now you can look beyond the ordinary.
All Which Glitters May be Silver
Since those days embellishment and digital print have become less incompatible and the embellishment my colleague was talking about is having a few moments in the sun.
This is changing further with the alliance of Canon and Skandecor, first announced at the 2024 iteration of Printing United. Now, though, it’s available to customers in the market and could be worth a look.
At this year’s Printing United, Canon will be showcasing Skandecor as an add on as option to the imagePRESS V family of digital presses. It makes a lot of sense when you view it as tool for your business. Is it something you need every day? Probably not. But when you can offer it as an option it grows legs and may clinch a deal. You can almost hear the customer saying, “You can do that? Tell me more!!”
Skandecor makes it possible to use silver foil on Canon imagePRESS V family printers to create high-end, eye-catching, and tactile designs. The foil adds metallic shine, luxury appeal, and contrast especially when used as a “spot” finish or on a page need some extra “pop.” Where to use it? How about on wedding and event invitations, labels and stickers, postcards, product packaging, business cards, children’s books, greeting cards, brochures, event tickets, direct mail, and more. Foil can even be used as an anti-counterfeiting method on variably numbered event tickets.
So here's the hook
As you know, print buyers come in looking for unique features that will make their printed materials stand out. Skandecor’s silver foil technology is appealing because it’s an add-on to the imagePRESS V family printers. From what I’ve seen, it delivers the kind of high-value premium output that can attract discerning clients, differentiate your services in a competitive market, and increase profit margins.
As an optional add-on to the imagePRESS V family, the Skandacor device allows for short runs, variable data foiling, and fast turnaround times for rush jobs. I think of a printer I use often asking if Thursday is okay or do I need the job sooner.
From what I’ve seen so far, the imagePRESS V family – especially the V1350 - are robust presses on their own offering quality, productivity, and versatility. If you already keep one busy it makes sense that investing in the Skandecor add-on can let you do more with the printer without significantly changing your workflow. Adding value to the printed output and offering more is often a good option.
In any case, it’s worth your time to swing by the Canon booth at Printing United to take a look.
