I'm sure there will be differences between the different vendors. Here's some info about one:

The plate coating is made of Novolak and/or cresol-formaldehyde resins with dyes that crosslink with heat or unlink in alkaline developers.
Positive (chemical) developers basically work by dissolving the coating. They're made with Hydroxides and water.
Negative coatings rely on mechanical developing and propanol or ethanol and potassium salt base.
