Opinions on different equipment needed

We currently run 3 to 4 million b/w impressions monthly and 200K to 300K monthly color impressions (various stock sizes 11 x 17 or larger).

For color we run a lot of 10pt. C1S full coverage p1s for perfect bound book block covers as well as a lot of 12 x 18 and 14.33 x 20.5, 80 & 100# gloss stock for 2 up flyers, post cards, rack cards, etc.. We do have our share of mixed media color work (covers and text with a possible insert). We will also be expanding to a need for a 27" sheet for color 6 pagers. Other than the C1S covers, consider all work duplex.

Something to note.....the C1S covers have to have be able to accommodate up to a 2" spine....so anything limited to a 19.3" or less sheet is not an option. We have to be able to go bigger than that.

We also do a good amount of b/w S.S. work and have two, inline booklet makers presently.

We are looking at the following:

Xerox - Iridesse and your standard Nuveras (144 or 288's...combo of each)

Canon - c10000vp for color and possibly a mix of VarioPrint 6180's or 6270's

Ricoh - C9200 or even a c7210X (not both, one or the other)

KM - (yet to be determined)

We've been a Xerox shop a long time. We will be getting new print equipment (not in addition to....but replacing old) and all these vendors are bidding with that in mind. Any Xerox issue that has been listed in the forums we have definitely experienced over the years so we are aware of those.

If you currently use any of the equipment above please leave your comments below. We are currently knee deep into the discovery / proposal process and have even visited some other sites that use some of this equipment. I'm doing all the usual due diligence but actual user feedback is always the most valuable. I realize that some of the above equipment is pretty new to the market but I figured I would ask.

Thanks in advance!

In the same boat here I think, looking at the same equipment. Still in the discovery and proposal process here as well, and Xerox has made a ton of issues for us these days...even if all pricing were equal I would have a tough time not looking at the competition based on the quality of service/serving the shareholder only practice they seem focused on. I guess your experience is similar if you are looking elsewhere.

We began this process in January (long term research based on knowing when our renewals are up, we rarely make a fast decision especially with equipment) and it took until last week to get a proposal from Xerox on a simple Nuvera, and not a super attractive one IMHO.

Only one piece of the puzzle, but we find the banner tray options that Ricoh/KM are currently offering pretty appealing, need to try that out as it is something we do already on different equipment, but would like to move on from.

Anyway, keep us posted with what you end up with.

The new ability of the 7200 (your color volume) to do 13 x 27.5 duplex from the banner tray is pretty amazing. My 7110 will only do simplex but it still does a good job just slower.

You know Xerox service history in your area, I would see if Ricoh/Canon/KM can beat that.

I will say in my area it seems Ricoh is starting to really push the techs harder in the past year to do more and more oddball equipment and it is not being received very well by the techs.

Are you dealing with Ricoh direct or a dealer?

Direct. I have a Production level tech and they have been having him do more roll fed systems which takes higher priority than us so it sucks we have had to wait to get service sometimes but it was still faster than Xerox since we can service the machine ourselves due to the self service program. Only need the tech when we get major issues like a down machine.

Unless they have made major improvements to the banner tray you can't run more than about and inch of stock without overloading the tray and possibly snapping the cables.

I have run up to about 6 inches of 11 x 25.5 60# text out of our banner tray with no issues. It does take less than that with thicker stocks.

Our issues have been on the output side, having to stack it neatly so we can run it through again, I really hate that it is simplex but have dealt with it. I need a huge jogger but these jobs are few and far between so we just deal with it.
