v280 clear toner?

Does it resemble a UV coat? My company is looking to upgrade from the v80, so just wondering about capabilities.

Does the v280 have a fifth slot for specialty toner or do I have to swap components out each time?

thanks!

you cant just get clear
the kit includes 4 specialty colors
it could resemble a spot UV but not a UV of the entire sheet
why dont you go to your local dealer and see it in person?

You have to swap components out as there are just 4 drums, etc. We saw samples from the new small Versant and compared to Iridesse they were pretty unimpressive. We had a V80 and considered the swap out capability on the new smaller Versants. We ended up going with the larger Versant which cannot do the swap out for clear etc. If you want a UV coat look I think you will actually need to get a UV coater or the really big 5-6 station machines. Like I said, check out the samples. And, swapping out components looks to be remarkablly inefficient. I am open to better information from anyone who is using the V280 with clear or silver. Just to cast aspersions on more than one brand, we looked at the Ricoh with 5 stations and didn't particularly like the samples there either. Maybe we are hard to please because we have foiling capability currently.

thanks all for the insights.

The previous shop I worked at had a Ricoh 7100 and 7110, like you Lorenzo, I was unimpressed. And while I found swapping out the fifth stations to be not a big deal technically, tho it took too long, my team was overwhelmed and always asked me to do it.

We have one - with the Gold, Silver, White and Clear toners. They only read against silk stock, and look best when used in simple designs. We've done invitations where the gold was used in a border around a grayscale picture, and the gold popped pretty well. But a lot of times you can't really discern the difference.

Plus it's expensive to flood the entire sheet for such a minimal difference since the clear toner isn't included in your click charge.

good to know and yeah, too expensive

the one color that has been the least used and xerox has had clear toner for the past 15 years is the clear color
the white silver and gold are great and more practical
of course depends on application

I sell Xerox, Canon and Konica production equipment and have a ton of experience with Xerox. The clear is like a spot UV not not exactly, on the Versant it is okay but I by far like it more on the Iridesse as you can layer which really allows it to stand out. Others have mentioned but clear on the Versant will also come with Gold, Clear, White and Silver kit. This Kit will require you to swap all drums and toners including the housing, this change over is about 20 minutes so not something you want to do often. Also note that depending on your clients trying to match registration perfectly with clear is going to be tough when you are rerunning the same stock thats already printed from your CMYK pass. This is why the Iridesse also shines!

For the cost of the machine and kit its not a bad add on as it will set you apart from many other local printers but its important to fully understand it so you can market it correctly. I see Silver, White and Gold being larger sellers and clear being the "hey I can also do this". I cover MN, SD, ND, NE, IA and WI if you are in these areas and want to chat more I am happy to do so but I hope this information helps. Xerox does have a ROI calculator online for the specialty colors make sure you check it out!

you also have a much more cost effective way of doing all this without the headache of swapping parts and units
