Xerox Versant 280, Custom Page Size, SIQA Alignment Woes

I've decided to set up a 12x9" custom page size on our Versant 280 so that I can print and saddle-stitch a finished 5.5x8.5"_full-bleed booklet with the online finisher.

I set up a custom preset page size fine and was going to set up auto alignment with SIQA and discovered that the device will not let me do a 2-sided alignment for a custom 12x9" sheet. The printer will however allow me to do a 1-sided alignment. I assumed this was straightforward but I guess not.

Folks, what am I missing?

interesting... I wish I knew the operational difference between the Versant 4100 and the 280. I run 12x9 SEF all day long for the very same reason, bleed 8.5x5.5 booklets, and haven't had any issues doing an automatic alignment.

Me too... and weird right? Also, love your signature "Certified CANVA hater since 2020" One additional thought, I'm picking up the sheet from Tray 1 but am now wondering if I should be using the HighCap... what tray are you loading your paper into for this 12x9 sheet size?

haha.... my "love" of all things CANVA goes so deep I don't even know where to begin. Sadly we (our district) pay for Canva as a service, we as the print shop have zero ability to give feedback about the service or even to be able to contact them to improve it. The fact that Pitstop has a dedicated preflight profile for fixing CANVA files. and when converted to an action its like hundreds (?) of fixes per page, it numbs the brain.

Our runs are usually big enough that I primarily run 9x12 out of my high-caps... but I know I have run them out of trays 1 and 2. Auto alignment I'm 99.9999999% sure came out of the high-caps, so you might be on to something there.

Are you typing the number in manually, or selecting it as a "standard" size on the printer interface? Or did you make a custom size?

I think Pippip is asking a good question too.

Your timing is impeccable, I just received my invoice from Canva after doing a 30 day demo for a "Pro" account. I'm starting to see a lot of clients submitting poorly created PDFs (via Canva) and have found it easier (so far) to access their Canva files directly, copying and editing in the app then downloading my own PDF. So far so good for digital and wide format devices... albeit some Adobe Illustrator work is needed at times.

Not related the exact problem but just on googling came across this snippet which I didn't know

  • Sequence Dependence: Adjustments must be performed in a specific order (Image Transfer -

    Alignment -

    Density) to be effective.

Assuming your customer sends you the edit link instead of the share link... The concept of Canva isn't a terrible one, its how they execute & deliver.

Some of the big issues I see day to day... Canva uses proprietary fonts, which means you "technically" have to "buy" them to edit text in Canva PDFs. Canva also likes to multi-layer objects for no apparent reason, I'm finding countless objects with 0% transparency over the top of other objects. Canva loves you use build black (95.09%, 95.10%, 44.94%, 94.89%) as true black, causing color clicks, thankfully its always the exact same CMYK build so I can easily re-map it in Pitstop. Canva uses the weirdest page sizes, and I'm not just talking A4/A3 vs US page sizes. I once did an experiment where I started a bunch of random templates in the same category, each created a completely different size than the last. Lastly (that I can think of) Canva always wants to prioritize exporting PNG pages, over flattened "PNG" PDF pages, over actual proper PDFs with embedded images/text, which bleeds are almost always non-existent anyways.

Agreed with all this, 100%. I keep telling my boss this too. Unfortunately in the market we're in Canva is a new reality so we have to modify to support it as best we can. Otherwise, say no equals lost revenue.

UPDATE: Got connected with Xerox Production Second Level support and he did a remote connect. Upgraded the device system software version from v81.1.31 to the latest public published version v81.31.81. This fixed the issue and allowed me to perform a 2-sided 12x9 alignment.

The one slight hiccup we discovered is that when I attempt to print the booklet job I had finished with centerfold and staple the job would 'disappear' out of the queue and nothing printed. He dived further into Command workstation and for some reason the correctly loaded paper shows up as 8.5x11 when he looked to add it to the paper catalogue. He then added it and modified the paper size in the catalogue to 9x12 and it now prints, folds and staples. The tech isn't sure why that is happening but we didn't have time to dive into that today.

I haven't used the Paper Catalogue feature before but the tech is suggesting that I should and now may have to specifically if I need to run this same 12x9 size on different paper types. Hope this info helps someone else in the future.

Best,
Randy

Seriously... what page size is this? LOL

Its proportionally the same as 8.5x11, BUT WHY is it 14.22 x 18.38 instead of 8.5x11???!!!!???? :ROFLMAO:
