Want to upgrade from Xerox Versant 180, recommendations please

They're both gonna have insanely slow hardware in them anyway. We've got external Fiery on both our Primelink's and it's woefully under powered. Like 8gb ram and an HDD that is abysmally slow. It takes almost 10 minutes to reboot.

Does anyone have any opinions on bundled -v- stand alone RIPs?

Our current V180 has a stand alone one but all our previous machines had bundled ones.

Fuji and Ricoh are saying bundled is fine for my needs (think the biggest file I've ever sent is 5gb!) as I don't do memory hungry variable data work. And surely a new bundled RIP will be better that the seven year old EX 180 I have now!

Xerox agent is saying you need a stand alone one and doesn't want to quote on bundled. 🤷‍♂️

All quoted so far are Fiery RIPS and include Fiery impose.
If you're not doing VDP, then the bundled will be just fine for processing speed. But take a look at the chart that @bcr posted to make sure you haven't become accustomed to using some of the features that the external one has that are not included or even available on the embedded (such as pad printing, tab insertion, hot folders, virtual printers, and APPE). The really big ones to me would be the hot folders (we use them for business cards since we do so many every day) and the APPE is almost a requirement these days to help with the various transparency issues. You may not realize you've been using it as it's probably toggled on by default in your current Fiery, but it really helps. Some of the external Fiery's also come with impose/compose. So if you're using that, then you'll need to get a new license, or see if they'll let you transfer over your old license.

More confused now!! 😱 😱

Just been speaking to another Fuji agent and they've said the Fuji Revoria Flow RIPs work a lot better with their machines than the Fiery especially when using the special colours. Can do all the imposition gubbins too. And as it's a standalone printer I'm not tied to a Fiery workflow with other machines in the equation.

Has anyone used a Revoria Flow RIP!?

I've just checked the specs of the bundled Fiery SC22C that comes with the Fuji and it states APPE is included. (Adobe PDF Print Engine 6 on spec sheet).

But thanks for the heads-up - a return to ghost images around drop shadows etc. would not be welcome!!

I know why does it have to be so confusing. I've been quoted for the fuji rip too and the difference is not enough for me to take the risk. I've heard contrasting opinions.

On total cost of ownership per quarter (lease/click/fiery etc) for us Xerox was working out at over £400 per quarter more expensive and on a lower spec four colour machine. They were way out on five colour.

Wow that’s quite substantial, any chance you could share what price you got the Fuji for

Change of plan!! 🤣

Through Xerox's bid-pricing system our agent has managed to pretty much matched Fuji's offering. And I know many of you will say Xerox are in trouble, but companies the size of Xerox don't just disappear (at worst they'll go into bankruptcy and re-spawn with new investment - and there's recently been big investment in them too).

Heart is ruling head a bit here I'll admit. We've been with Xerox through the same agent for 20+ years. And our agent has got us out of the shit many, many times especially during Covid.

And at 58 it may be my last investment of this size and I really can't be arsed learning a new companies quirks and failings.

We have decided against the five colour machine though. Yes the pink will make prints brighter but I don't see how I'd upsell that to my client base - they already think what we produce on our V180 is great. And the other gold/silver/clear/white/textured options come with big additional costs. It's not just a case of popping a different toner in. And the end product would still be poorer than proper foiling so we'll keep sending that to trade,

Hey, Id just urge you a little more caution when considering Xerox and their financial status. We jumped ship last year/this year because of what all was going on. We were on the edge of dumping them because of loyalty but after speaking with the tech's about how the service calls were being handled it was eye opening that they aren't heading in the right direction. We had 2 techs who serviced us (kinda rural midwest USA) and they were both amazing. Then our "best" one who normally handled our calls took early retirement/buyout option. He didnt want to put his retirement in jeopardy and not long afterwards they started having big layoffs. He saw the writing on the wall. Also, that big investment they got isn't necessarily what you would think it is if I read articles correctly. They got a $500 million "investment" because they sold off some of their IP or used it as collateral for the money.

My tech explained to us that service calls were being handled by AI and it was an absolute mess because the higher ups deemed this more "efficient". He said he spoke with service managers who said that said the AI system literally had techs stationed around Dallas, TX driving to Houston and Houston ones driving up to Dallas. They were literally passing each other to their calls. I also saw in the system when I put in some calls that it would assign a tech from a city just over 3 hours away when my usual techs were 45 mins away and there are 3 larger cities closer to us than the one the tech was coming from. Hell I had one of the randomly assigned tech's show up due to a broken lift wire in our OHCF. They diagnosed it on a Thursday and said they would be back Monday to install the part. Went to print something and she had left the machine so that it wouldn't print from any trays, not just the broken one. I called our normal tech and he walked me through a few steps to get it up and running.

Yes, Xerox wont disappear WHEN they file bankruptcy but remember that service is what keeps these machines running. They're still laying off techs and other employees. Your tech who is 30 mins away might not have a job next week and now your tech is 2 hours away. And when you complain they'll just shrug it off and leave you hanging and fighting them.

I'm UK based and my service from Xerox has barely changed over the years. It's always been same day if you call early or next day. And in 95% of cases they fix issues first time - if not they get parts shipped in from Holland or warehouses in the UK.

I'm not big enough to command service calls within hours - there's just me and my dog in the shop! 😀

All interesting as we have a Versant 280 in-house and the previously Xerox... now a new Fuji dealer in town is knocking at the door begging for us to 'look at their new showroom production unit'.

It seems Xerox are fighting back, similar to you got a revised price and it’s now a slightly better tco vs the Fuji. I’ve been with my agent about 10 years and was reluctant to move as they have been great after dealing with a few not so great ones over the years. The MD has literally driven over some supplies on a weekend to bail me out before. Moving was a risk I wasn’t sure I was prepared to take despite the price & I was worried about the service after looking into it. Now that the price is sorted it looks like I’ll be signing up
