The name is actually pretty useless, as somebody could make profile with the same name, but it would not be the same profile. Some applications with check the MD5 hash of the profile to check it is the same, I believe that method is recommended by the ICC. Not sure if it's in Acrobat as I have...

I think you might be using the 'wrong' offset printers!! The right ones would have approached you to iron out these problems before they went to press!

Kind of ironic, Pantone using their almost monopoly to move to a subscription model, very much like Adobe did with the Creative Cloud! Intrigued to know what will come next, will an alternative to Pantone emerge?

Looking forward to seeing lot's of hand-made 'Pantone' colors with incorrect alternate color definitions and naming conventions from designers who are not willing to pay for something they had included as part of Creative Cloud!

Yep, Adobe are a licensee. So this is a way they can get everything current!

The more I think about this, the more disastrous it is. What will happen if you open an existing job with Pantone colors in a version that does not support them? This is not going to end well for anybody!!

Can you run a Windows VM on them and use windows software to drive them until they are compatible?

The selection is the tricky part. You need to find a way to select only those you want to change. So maybe length, thickness, color, position. You need a unique combination which will only select what you need to change!
