    Cutter/Guillotine Blade Sharpening

Ok fellas I am in search of someplace, preferably in southern Indiana but understand ill most likely have to ship, to sharpen my cutter blades. We have been using a local company for the last few years that has always done a pretty good job. I wont say stellar but they've always gotten the job...

    Need equipment advise

The calls are sooooo annoying. When they call I just ask them what the due date is. When they tell me the date I ask them if it’s that date yet. They say no so I tell them that’s their answer lol

2 part question about Challenge 20 Cutter and MicroCut Jr

Ok guys and gals, we have an old challenge 305 that we do not use anymore. It has a microcut jr installed on it. Came with it when we purchased it. We do have a Challenge 20 cutter that we use often and wanted to put the microcut on it. I contacted microcut and they said it was compatible and to...

    Political Mailings

I think thats more or less 1 party that does it like that, and CA is heavy on that party. Without getting political, we've only had a handful of candidates' campaigns ask about the union bug. All of those have been blue. Ive also been able to convince some of them when I say we are woman and...

Help with Imposition 6x9 Perfect Bind Job

We use the Fiery imposition as it came with our Versant. Its pretty costly if you have to purchase it outright I believe and does not have the flexibility as the other standalone softwares. That said, we do this type of job fairly often. I will gang up the job 4 up and then set the page size...

Dispatching finished jobs. (carton or shrink wrap?)

We shrink wrap some stuff. But we ship everything in boxes anymore. Our boxes run about $.85/box for 8.75x11.25x10 double walled. So even for our palletized jobs we’re looking at $15-30 which isn’t even noticed if the job is that large.

Looking to start a print business & need advice

You have some lofty goals for that little space if you are wanting to do digital, wide format, promotional printing and finishing like die cutting, lamination, etc. 1000 sq ft. is a good starting point but you'll be running low on space just with a digital press and the storage needed to feed...

how much ventilation is really needed for digital presses?

I’ve never heard of anyone needing ventilation on anything other than offset, an iGen and Indigo’s. I think you’ll be just fine. I’m sure with the heat your getting a smell from the paper coatings and the toner being melted. But besides that your fine. The biggest problem these presses can...

What Equipment in Your Shop Do You Undervalue?

I also will be putting this bad boy through its paces this week. Machine definitely gives us a little edge over printers our size as most don’t do perfect binding

What Equipment in Your Shop Do You Undervalue?

So I was just working on a job and got to thinking about what pieces of equipment in your shop are often overlooked and dont get any love but are crucial to operating. Probably my number one piece is my Syntron J-50 Jogger. I actually picked it up used from a guy who bought storage units. Paid...

    Offset & digital combination

@Bashv What is the specs on the job? If its feasible to print the color pages digitally and insert, there's a good chance the whole book could be produced digitally and it then eliminates the problems you are having.

What volume discounts do you use for digital?

Sounds like you need to be better at printing! lol no im just joking around. I get that aspect of it. We luckily haven't had to eat any jobs that is crippling. We have ordered jobs that the company has begged us to not reprint at their expense but the mistakes were just too big to overlook and...

What volume discounts do you use for digital?

I get what your saying but a lot of times we can make less margins on longer runs and still be very profitable. We might be happy to make a 20% margin on a run of 1000 novels but I wouldn’t want to only make 20% on a run of 10 novels. Our business card orders don’t double in cost per 500 either...

What volume discounts do you use for digital?

I think there’s always a place for run discounts even in digital. We charge less per perfect bound book if we do 100 vs 10. It takes 45 mins for the perfect binder alone to warm up. But once we get going we can lower the cost. Our charge cost will always be lower per book on a run of 1000 vs a...

Good or bad idea in my situation? (Only selling posters with mounts/mattes)

@PrintingInLincs i hope you realize that everyone on this board is trying to help you. Most of us are senior members and have been on this forum a while and have a lot of knowledge of the printing process. We’ve also followed your post and can remember your situation pretty well. I’ll break it...

printing & cutting booklets for the first time

This is probably the easiest way of doing it. We've done it many times before and also do it with 5.5x8.5 booklets to cut our clicks in half if its a color booklet. Our Versant 3100 is really accurate on the fold and can be tweaked if needed. Plus adding the square spine to it gives it a great...

Good or bad idea in my situation? (Only selling posters with mounts/mattes)

Having a “high up Xerox tech” come out isn’t someone in the printing industry really. They don’t run these machines day in and day out or handle any other part of the printing process. Unless that tech ran a print shop for years he’s unlikely to know anymore about the printing process than a 2nd...

Good or bad idea in my situation? (Only selling posters with mounts/mattes)

We’ve went over this time and time again about the trimming. Your equipment is very capable of creating perfect prints in 1 sheet. I even demonstrated it for you. I downloaded your file, printed a print with a 3mm border and trimmed it in about 10 minutes. Did you ever consult anyone in the...
