I think it is better to convert to CMYK before printing to a press and apply a color profile calibrated for your press. However, i have seen better results from some laser printers when you allow the RIP to convert the images to CMYK. Depends on the printer and situation. check out this...

I prefer to convert images to CMYK so I can apply the right color profile to them. You can resize an image down, but not enlarge it without loosing image quality. Perhaps I am a purist, but I find the tried and true methods continue to produce better results.
