Blanket Cylinder packing: hard vs soft?

So what are your preferences and why? We have been running soft packing for quite some time now, with the (perceived) benefit of giving the blanket a little more resistance to minor smashes. In this regard they seem beneficial: they'll take a hit and survive (until you put on a high-end job!)...

    Printing, the future, your thoughts?

All of my life I've been involved in the printing trade, I literally grew up in a printing factory and my family has been in the game for several generations (my father believes I'm the 7th generation of printer in our family, traced way back to Germany over 100 years ago). I'm not encouraging...

    Spray powder bombs-40" Komori

Ok so we are getting what *appears* to be spray powder bombs when backing up jobs at the moment. On the job we are currently running, it's requiring a blanket wash at least twice per stack, and it shows up pretty badly in the 4 colour screens, but is mainly evident on the first 2 units (black...

    Dealing with messy alternate shift?

Ok... so recently our shift manager fired our offsider, and it has been 2 months now and i cannot see a replacement coming soon, if at all. This has made life more difficult of course, running a 40" without an assistant is a big big job, and its not until they are gone that you realise how much...

    Komori 40" creasing..

We are having a few minor probs with our 40" Komori... Firstly, longitudinal creasing (grip to tail), always on the drive side of the press, and only on the light stock that we use a lot of(80gsm 'velvet'). It is not terribly bad, not enought to pull up the job, but irritating nonetheless...

Tips for cleaning sheets from rollers??

Had a few sheets up the rollers today, not a common thing but a fair pain in the ass when it does!! One unit was a fairly easy clean up, it was around the water forme so easily lifted out and cleaned, but the other was deep inside on the second ink forme so not so easy to remove and replace...

    Tales of breakage!

Ok here's something a little different... usually these discussions are centered around repairing or dealing with issues that printing presses throw at us.. but its time for a little entertainment.. lets talk about the times when it seemed the world had ended, when you had to make THAT call to...

    Major set off

On monday mornin the next press over discovered that a job run on the weekend had set off worse than anything we had ever seen, about 5,000 sheets of 250gsm artboard that had been printed 5 col both sides then varnished 1 side to seal 877 silver.. it had plenty of drying time before...

    graveyard shifts

Anyone got some good ideas re dealing with the bodyclock issues that come from rotating shifts and specifically graveyards? I dont mind the shift so much but lack of sleep and the booze and pills ive resorted to probably arent the best solution :(
