Acrobat or InDesignCS4 script to print discrete pages

I have received a PDF with thousands of financial-type statements that will be printed as individual stitched booklets and mailed.
Is there some kind of scripting available that will enable Acrobat or InDesign CS4 to print the file in sets of 8 (ie pages 1 through 8 is the first booklet, pages 9 through 16 the second, and so on) to my booklet-making copier?

Yes, there is, right in InDesign and its named surprisingly, print booklet .
Choose perfect bound, and signature size of 8 pgs and you're done. Provided of course, you're printing it 2-up (for 4-up, etc. you will need some kind of imposition product - there are too many to mention).
However, you have to place the pages in InDesign first. There is a script (Multipage importer) that will do it for you.
You might also have the option to do all this on the RIP of the copier, but since you did not tell us what it is, we can't help you there.

It's printing off a KM650, folded and stitched inline on the copier (Creo RIP) which does not have the capability to separate out the individual booklets and needs single pages for its saddle stictch option.

Do you use hotfolders? In Acrobat you can split a file using the command, you guessed "Split Document" in the pages tool (Acrobat X) acrobat 9 it was in a menu somewhere. You can choose to split by file size or number of pages or even top level bookmarks, and get option to name your parts.
If you have a hot forlder system then you should get a booklet per file? You should be able to batch print the files and them being split into documents ought to be enough for any workflow with a brain to figure out they are not to be re-combined
