Unfortunately this is not uncommon and one aspect that i loathe when dealing with clients
 
"As I was going back through my calculations to see if there was any way to get the price down to your $4.500 figure, I realized that I transposed a number incorrectly. It's not $6,581, it's $8,581. Since the error was mine, we'll agree to stay with the $6,581 figure and just eat the loss."
 
"If you can find your way to postpone the requested delivery time by say, three-four months, we'll be able to do your job in the slow season..."
