Can you run a water based sealer in a 5th printing unit?

Morning All,

This may be the dumbest question ever, but i wanted to know if this was possible.

We have a 5 colour press, we only use the 5th unit for applying a sealer varnish, we have heard that applying a AQ or water based coating to our prints may make it possible to apply a UV spot coating from another machine we have offline on top.

Is it possible to run a coating solution through the 5th unit (the 25 gallon type) or do i have to buy some super expensive special water based sealer thats design to run in a conventional duct?

Would appreciate anyones advice with this please.

Kelstar makes a water based coating to run in the ink train, makes a bit of a mess and a little hard on the rollers but it runs quite well once you get over the learning curve.

Waterbase coating does'nt fair well on a litho roller train and I would not advise it. You can convert your 5th print unit to run waterbase but dont forget you have to dry the coating so hopefully you have good hot air or IR dryers on your press. here's a couple of links about print unit conversions.
