Challenge Model A 3 knife trimmer - For perfect bound books?

A question of the Challenge Model A 3 knife trimmer:

Anyone have experience with the Challenge 12x12 3 knife trimmer cutting perfect bound books? We do short runs, some thick books, and would like to avoid our guillotine as it is easy to crush spines. I notice that the knives come straight down rather than "slicing", so I'm curious how it does on books. We can't spend the money that they want for "real" 3 knife trimmers (!) Thanks!

If this is the old style 3 knife trimmer and the knife comes straight down, it will have the same effect on your books that your guillotine does.
