Converting select pages from CMYK to Grayscale in a .PDF

Hello,

I am sending a magazine out to be published to a company that charges more based on how many color pages you printed. The magazine is 84 pages long, but only 25 or so have images. They send it back, saying that the whole document has a CMYK composition. Can anyone inform me on how to convert only certain parts of the document to grayscale?

Thanks for your help,
Ben

Are you sure they are not referring to the position of your CMYK pages within the document. You don't say how you are folding or printing the magazine but the printer will need to generate a folding scheme based on the binding style. If they are printing the magazine on a 4 page press for example each plate will contain 4 pages in specific order required for folding. In order for the printer to reduce the cost of printing, the CMYK pages would need to fall on to the same sections. If your CMYK pages are scattered throughout the magazine then chances are every section will require more plates and press time as each section could for example contain 3 B/W pages and one CMYK page.
