CPC 1.03 problem

Had an odd problem with my register console this week. The console is still functioning but not working right.... Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

I had just keyed in a set of plates, hung them, and when I returned to the console, no keys or LED's were lit (except the power LED), no matter which button I hit. I turned the console off with the key, waited 10 secs, turned back on. The power LED was on but nothing else would come on no matter which buttons I hit. I rebooted the press and console.

Everything works, but I can't select a unit by the color button (KCMY) instead I could only select a unit by unit number. If nothing is done on the console for aprox 15 min, all the led's on the screen go off, but come back on when you push a button (almost like it has a screen saver!). Also, there is a key (24) that randomly moves it self up alot. At first I thought this was the work of a faulty button, but I noticed that when key 24 randomly moves itself, it moves itself to the exact same spot on all units, hardly the work of a bad button.

The console is working, but if something is going wrong, I'd rather deal with it before it dies completely.

Maybe poor pin connection? Reestablish connection by pulling circuit boards out of socket and push back in. That would be the first (and cheapest) fix I would try.

I'm reaching on this one, Scooter, but seems there's no other ideas being thrown out there. You mention zone 24 is faulting, maybe unplug that button, and see what happens?

Our old presses with CPC 1.03 had a habit of acting up when the blue ribbon strips in the console came slightly loose. The pressmen would set the densitometer down in the same spot near where the key is located and eventually the boards underneath would come loose or the blue ribbon strip would pop out of its plug to the board; weird things would happen and the console would seem to have a poltergeist.

The light pens would also cause the console to act funny sometimes. If they went bad or had a short the console would loose it's display. We would have to unplug the light pens and clean the plug itself.

The key 24 moving could be a combination of bad button or bad connection where the board connects to the button, mechanically the key does not know anything different. If all keys on all units are moving to the same spot in one zone only then it has to be something telling them to move, tricky problem for sure.

Thanks for the great input. Followup on key 24, turns out the button had become so sensitive, that just setting your finger on it, without pushing, made it take off like a bat out of hell. Button replaced, that problem is solved. Mike, interesting thought..... We always set the densitometer down north of the key too. It looks like the first step is going to be reseating some boards and checking cables. If an electrician comes in, I know thats the first thing he's going to do.
