Not that I'm ever going to use it, but it doesn't look like distiller has a default compliancy setting like X-3 and X-1a do? Am I right or missing something?

Oops! I meant for X-4.

No, you can't get an X-4 out of Distiller because when making PostScript the transparency is flattened. So you'd be stuck with PDF/X-1a (which isn't such a bad thing).
