Extracting Images from PDF (using Photoshop) But retaining Original names.

So i've been sent a bunch of PDF files that the customer no longer has the native files for. When i go to open them in illustrator i get 'linked image XXXX.eps cannot be found' error.

So i drop the PDF into photoshop, click the images tab, select the images I want and then they open in photoshop. I was wondering if anyone knew a way or retaining the original image name when opening/resaving them in photoshop so i dont have to manually figure out what they are and type it in when i resave the extracted images. Mainly i want to do this so i dont have to relink the images in Illustrator when i go to open the PDF.

thanks in advance.

The original name is not preserved (as best as I recall) once the PDF is made. It simply becomes an object in the PDF.

Matt is correct that the name is lost when an image is embedded in a PDF (unless it's in the image metadata).

However, it's likely the PDFs that you're dealing with have useful names themselves, right? There are many free tools that do PDF image extraction, and most of them will output image names based on the PDF filename. You should be able to find one that will batch the entire folder at once; don't drive yourself insane trying to work it by hand from Photoshop. Go take a look and see what fits your system and needs:

Acrobat can export all the images in a PDF without any other tools.
Do you not have Acrobat?

The thing with Acrobat is it changes the images when you export them. If not altering your images is important, that may not work. It's also going to be more difficult to do a large folder of files that way since there's some manual intervention needed.
