The Ghent Workgroup (GWG) has announced the availability of GWG-2022: a new specification. Since the last major specification was released in 2015, separate efforts took place for specific market segments such as Sign & Display, Digital Print and Packaging; but there was no real consolidation into the base specification. This made it more difficult to use and more difficult for GWG to evolve it.

The latest GWG-2022 specification changes this by introducing new innovations in a streamlined, spec format. According to GWG’s David van Driessche, “The major novelty in GWG-2022 is the possibility to improve preflight results by cutting down false positives—preflight errors that are reported but would never cause production problems. For application vendors, working with the new specification format makes their life easier”.
Key Changes
  • Cutting down on false positives—A preflight using GWG-2022 compliant profiles now allows focusing on files that really would cause problems.
  • Processing Steps—In label & packaging workflows, ISO 19593-1 makes it possible to identify elements in a design needed for specific processing steps, such as identifying cut & fold lines in a complex design. The GWG-2022 specification includes support for the Processing Steps standard & identifies which steps should & should not be present for different packaging products.
  • Streamlined specification formatGWG-2022 is released as a highly structured spreadsheet, which clearly defines definitions, requirements & variants. The definitions & requirements have been rewritten in a more standardized & exacting fashion, and include unique IDs and version numbers to make it easier for software vendors to work with.
More information about this specification can be found on the GWG website.
