Yup, I no longer have TV via cable after more years than I can remember. Now I just have the interwebs (and DVDs)for TV and telephone.
A Roku box gets me TV (and Hoopla for movies), nothing as extensive as what is available south of the border - but good enough for now. Strangely I can get US porn channels free but not our tax funded CBC. Hmmmm.
Phone service is free from TextMe and Talkatone both local and long distance.
It's a weird feeling.

ENJOY! We recently moved and spent the summer with no TV and NO internet. We got internet in September, I got a Apple TV for us at Christmas and LOVE it.
 
Rogers Cable TV is free in my building in downtown Toronto. I didn't watch TV for several years, but I think it carries CBC.
 
But where do you get your internet from? Isn't it either through a cable company or Verizon? So you still pay for a cable into your house, right? As more people dump the TV part of the service, the providers will just charge more for internet bandwidth.

Yes, I still have Internet access through a cable service. That I'll keep but not the TV channels nor the landline.
 
The porn channels represent capitalism, where an open market of competing providers are dependent on both their products ease of use and content quality, fostering a tendency towards customer fulfillment and cost reduction.
The CBC is nice, but I bet it is no bargain for the government to run.
 
Almost everywhere people live in Canada, CBC can be picked up by antenna. You just need a TV with a digital tuner. We put up our Antenna in Toronto and get 15-20 channels, weather permitting. That and an Apple TV, Netflix and chrome extensions like Hola gives us access to almost everything we want to watch. Paid sports stations like TSN, ESPN and the like are the only things that remains off limits. But, no cable bill is nice.
 
Well...after cancelling cable TV Jan 31 I still get channels 2-23 (Feb 18) clear like I used to get when I paid for it. Weird.

Some friends of mine just cut the cable and put up an antenna in their attic and they said the few stations they get are as clear as cable. I don't think it has anything to do with a promotion from the cable company being owed to you.

My Wife and I got rid of couple months ago when we realized we were only watching one show (that we now get on Netflix). Has anyone read the news about Comcast attempting to purchase Time-Warner? Apparently it will make for a near monopoly.
 
Did Canada change to digital like the US did a few years ago? That was such a big deal here, switching from analog to digital TV stations around the country. That may explain why you're getting some channels.
 
Canada has been all digital for a while. It didn't seem to be as big of news, because we changed a few years after the US. So, all the new TVs had tuners in them already previous to the change.
 
OK, I cut the cord January 27 2014 - it's now April 8 2014. I.E. I haven't paid for cable TV since January 27...but I still get channels from 2-21. Weird.
 
With all this talk about people cutting cable, I wonder if there's a forum out there with a bunch of cable industry workers talking about the demise of cable television?
 
Using a variety of software and nzb files with a NAS drive, and sync'd with a Roku running PlayON/Plex you can watch almost any program. Sickbeard/Couch Potato in conjunction with SABNZBD can turn your hard drive into a PVR.
 
OK, it's June 3 - I still get the basic first 20 channels even though I cancelled the service long ago and according to my bills I'm not paying for them. Maybe they are limited in what they can cancel?
I've also cancelled my land line telephone - all I seemed to get was telemarketers and wrong number faxes anyway.
So, now I only pay for interweb access. I have a pay-as-you-go cellphone - costs about $10 a month, but I seldom use it. Instead I use "textme" to call landlines even long distance - it' free. I also use "talkatone" also free but no long distance. I use iOS Messages for text messages.
"hola" lets me access programs that aren't available in Canaduh.
Cutting the cord has opened up the world.
