large format Tiling

What software are you using to tile large documents for large format ? The company I work for currently exports PDFs out of indesign and places them Back in individual Indesign documents? Got to be a more productive way. Any feedback appreciated. Yes the Fiery rip does do tiling but the do a lot on the prep side.

I use Illustrator, with the Artboard feature, its super easy even more then the in-rip tiling.
You take a PDF link it in Illustrator, make boxes with the rectangle tool on an other layer to the desired tiling, select all your boxes, go to the Object menu / Artboards, Convert to artboards, export to PDF, send to rip and voila !

and the overlaps? what about for store windows? or when the maximum file exceeds size the page size in illustrator?

just make your artwork half size and scale it in-rip, 50% in Illustrator equals to 200% in-rip and so on...
For the overlaps, say you print a 48"x24" in two pieces of 24", make one square of 24"x24",snap it to the top left corner - copy paste in front - use the coordinates to move exactly by 24", change the anchor point to the left side and make the first square 25", you get 1 inch overlap.
if you just make your squares overlap by the amount you want Illustrator will make the Artboards overlap the same way. Just play with Illustrator and you will figure it out.
