I just saw in my Facebook page today about a 65 year old man marrying a 12 year old girl and they even had their wedding photo taken on the famous steps in downtown NY. This is ridiculous.

Is this the best news you can come up with? How about the hero police officers in the Las Vegas event? How about High Schools that still teach printing skills, where have they gone? You can’t solve a problem if you are not aware that a problem exists. Awareness may mean that some forum members may petition their political representatives to address the issue in their state. I was not aware that child marriages take place in the US nor apparently was the BBC which is likely why they produced this story. If you feel so strongly about the topic then why not be part of the solution on behalf of the children by talking to your state representatives about chaging the laws.
If you disagree with description and/or the purpose of this forum then perhaps your feelings should be expressed to the administrator.

Just recently there was a heated argument whether a service provider should deny a job or nor, based on his/her moral disciplines. Not printing invitations for allowed marriages might get you into trouble if somebody get serious about state laws. I think Gordo is spot on about asking the help of local reps. Alas, I think most of the 'democratically elected' above local level are playing the game 'safe and cozy', they won't throw a wrench into the inner workings of the mainstream agenda. Which is very clearly: dismantle all local and personal freedom, impose total control over everybody, dilute and ruin the society by pushing false/fake values.

I would just like to throw out that Indiana has passed a law about 2 years ago called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. It was all over the news because of it. But now Christians in Indiana can refuse the work without risk of being sued. Its a fine line.

That's disgusting. I heard about such "traditions" in some third world countries, but US? Well, that's just neat. Street shooting, police misconduct, now child marriage. And if for the second case people create organizations like aaappp (can't say I had an occasion to work with them, but I heard they're helpful), when it comes to child marriage people simply don't know about it, just like I didn't to date.

Whose business is it besides the two families? Marriage should NOT involve the state.
The last thing we need is more laws. We need to scrap all the laws. About 5 laws is all we need in the USA.
1. Law against physically harming another person with varying degrees from slapping to murder.
2. Law against damaging property with degrees.
3. Law against Arson.
4. Law against Theft.
5. Law against Threatening.

I agree that many cities and states have gone crazy with some of the laws. We hear stories of towns with laws against spitting, or chewing gum while walking backward. However, I think 5 laws is over simplifying and unrealistic. The inplant where I work actually prints the book that lists all of the crime processing codes for the county sherrif. I skim through it sometimes to see all of the crazy things. I haven't counted, but it's a good size book with small print, so at least several hundred laws. Most of the laws are sub categories of the 5 you listed. Various forms of theft, various forms of physical harm, etc. You are missing several critical categories like laws for vehicle operation (sub categories for cars, boats, motorcycles, etc), kidnapping, manufacturing/possession of illegal items (not just drugs, but weapons of mass destruction, child porn, etc), then you have things like disturbing the peace, forgery, and so forth. Unfortunately criminals are creative and keep coming up with ways to do bad stuff, so the government has to make a law against it so punishment can be applied accordingly.

We're operating under the shared agreement that child marriage harms children and thus, child marriage should involve the state because it harms children. And if you were talking about incest, a child of incest certainly has an dramatically increased chance of "harm" to be done to them in the form of increase propensity for birth defects & diseases which could warrant the involvment of the state.

Your suggestion that there should be a law against "threatening" shows you agree there are harms we should legislate against besides just physical ones as a threat is more of a mental/emotional "harm" that affects the victim's behavior rather than a direct physical harm.

So your comment then leaves the question...do you think these things don't cause harm?
