Magic disappearing gradient feathers in InD4

A client-supplied InDesign4 file has rectangles filled with CMYK builds of Pantone colors that have gradient feathers applied to them; these are placed on top of full-bleed photos. The effect is to fade the rectangle's color into the photo. If I export to PDF 1.6 (our standard for our Heidelberg workflow), the rectangles show no color or gradient. I can select them in PitStop, which tells me that they're filled with 100% of the built color, but I can't see it. When I export to a flattened pdf, PDF 1.3, they appear as intended. What also appears are the dreaded white lines.

Some blend modes are Multiply, some Normal, one is Color. Exporting with the underlying photo removed doesn't matter. I've created pdfs before with this effect that worked fine. Can anyone suggest what might be different in this file?
