Perfect Binding setup in Preps

How does one setup the gaps for perfect bound books that have photos that cross over
from page to page? We generally use double 1/8 on each side for the grind, but the pix
just dont seem to line up properly after binding..The verticle is perfect but any angle lines
in the pix seem to miss align.Any ideas on how to make this work?

You should ask the company that does your perfect binding. What grind off should you use and if you are using their recommended grind off. Also ask them how to fix this problem. They should be the experts at this.

It sure sounds like a binding issue. This is not Preps but a failure of the binding house on communicating their grind off. Your .125 on each side is standard, maybe it is too much for them or they have poor quality control.

Here is a screen shoot of what Im saying..Notice the crossover
Any Ideas?

toejoe,
When the sheets are printed, this is how it will look and it is correct. When sent to the binder to be bound, they will grind off/cut the center space and the two pages should look correct.

If you were to trim each page to the final trim size and put the two pages with the cross over together, this is how the finished product should look.

I hope this helps.

PCModem is correct. this is how it will look. keep in mind that you now have a 1/4" gap (1/8" for the left page and 1/8" for the right) in between pages and the layout is not like a saddle stitch where the two pages meet at the actual fold. If you were to remove 1/4 inch (which represents the grindoff area) from between the two pages and then moved the pages together, you'd see that the alignment is fine. Does this make sense?

The alignment problem you are seeing after binding, is more than likely a binding problem, not necessarily something wrong with your layout.

On saddle stich you shingle the pages in, on perfect bound you should be pulling they pages out towards the fly. What happens is when they take the grind off in on the perfectbinder they do not get exactly the sane amount as what you have set up in you template in preps, part of the page gets sucked into the binding when they glue it. Your printer will tell you how to position you pages so that your hook ups, or crossover will work right. The amount of pages and the pages the hookups are on in the magazine will determine how much you need to move the image out. Any prepress person with experince will help you out on this one. Problem is most prepress people now have no knowlege on how to layout a magzine, most of the old strippers have been laid off or moved on. You can also check the fold off the press to see if that is that is on. If the fold is off the crossover will be off. Check the fold from the press sig, is it on? If its off the hookup will be off also.

This tends to get a little tricky because it can vary according to thickness of book, stock used and where the pages fall within the book.
You need to make sure you allow .0625" to .125" extra allowance for the grindoff. Speaking to a vendor you should be ok allowing .0625" and have a decent crossover.
What this means is that the designer should bump the pages that have crossovers out at least .0625 so that by the time the book gets the .125" grindoff the crossovers will meet decently.
