Printer turns down work

I used to do crime scene and autopsy stuff in Tacoma. The prosecuting attorney's office loved me! Would bring me beer and stuff. After several years I was starting have really brutal dreams...graphic stuff. I told them I couldn't do their work anymore. My boss was obviously not happy with me, but...he wasn't going to do it. Not the same as turning something down for a belief system/set. I did see things I wish I could eradicate with brain floss!

I saw this article earlier today. I do not personally think that the printer was the one that "inflamed" this situation. In general white people in the UK are being bullied at every turn. It's basically 1984 over there (not joking).

What gives you this preposterously false impression?

EDIT: I'm inclined to agree with the first part. If this printer were already known to specialise in literature for Christian groups, then it does look like a set-up to generate a story. It has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's ethnicity, though.

I'm not going to pretend that someone that identifies as "transgender" isn't mentally ill for one second. It's disgusting to think that there are people who think it's acceptable for children under the age of 18 to be "trans". There is an age of consent for intercourse, which is absolutely appropriate, but for some reason mentally ill adults are forcing 12-year-olds to take hormone pills, and that's totally acceptable/not a jail-worthy offense.

While I agree, I'm not getting in to that. The crux of this thread is that the business owner, the one who took the financial risk, the one who probably worked 48 straight hours without sleep on many occasions, to get his/her business off the ground, the one who regularly works 75 to 80 hours a week, the one who is ultimately responsible for making sure all his/her employees get paid before he/she takes one red cent out of the business, is being told by some authority who he can, and can't do business with. Basically, he's damned if he does, and, damned if he don't. That's just wrong on so many levels........................

I don't understand what this has to do with the original statement that Danny asked about; how does any of this prove that white people in the UK are being bullied?

Yeah, thanks for that. But back to the completely unrelated subject I asked about, what gives you the impression that 'white people in the UK are being bullied at every turn'?

Simply unethical. "and let not a people’s enmity incite you to act otherwise than with justice."
Business has nothing to do with religion.

I believe he is referring to articles like these. It does support his theory on this as I could not find any articles about muslims or any other religion/ethnicity being arrested for the opposite.

One thing that bothers me in these instances is the vociferous narrative by those who feel aggrieved, there seems to be no middle ground in emotive opinion anymore, no debate or discourse and then social media is mobilized to build a case against the business based on perceived injustices, it used to be social media was for sharing inane transitory life moments where now it can make or break a person or business based on someone's feelings

More people than you think see this trend, and even more are waking up to it. The current liberal/progressive agenda is dying and is on the way out. Soon enough the "crazy people" with their "crazy ideas" will lose their power, and people will be able to carry out their lives and state their opinions without being crucified. We're truthfully in a much worse place than most even realize, but it seems that we are making big headway in the opposite direction.

I wish I could say the same about the UK and Canada.

I don't want to get tooooo political but I just have to throw this out here . . . . I believe that the reason that in the last presidential election, with all the pollsters saying Hillary was going to win in a landslide is that with the aggressive "liberal" spokespeople skewering Trump supporters that they just shut up and didn't answer any polls or if they did they did not say what they believed, and they kept their mouths shut at home also . . . better to remain silent than get yelled at . . . . but when it came time to cast their ballots . . . well . .. we all know how that turned out don't we . . . she even wrote a book about it . . . "What Happened" . . .

The silent majority spoke . . . thats what happened.

Mmmm, not sure that's right. After all Hillary received almost 3 million more votes than Trump ( http://tinyurl.com/jop2spc )

The majority did speak - but having the majority vote doesn't mean one wins the election.

Can i recommend a book by Thomas Sowell called "Intellectuals and Society", which imo accurately depicts the current conundrum where we have leftist intellectuals completely out of sinc with most working class, in it he makes the point " Among the consequences of the economic illiteracy of most intellectuals is the zero-sum vision of the economy in which the gains of one individual or one group represent a corresponding loss to another individual or another group, the widespread notion, coalescing into a doctrine, that one must ‘take sides’ in making public policy or even in rendering judicial decisions, ignores the fact that economic transactions would not continue to take place unless both sides find these transactions preferable to not making such transactions”

Sowell draws a sharp distinction between people who produce goods and services and those who deal only with ideas: “At the core of the notion of an intellectual is the dealer in ideas, as such— not the personal application of ideas, as engineers apply complex scientific principles to create physical structures or mechanisms an intellectual’s work begins and ends with ideas, however influential those ideas may be on concrete things—in the hands of others. Adam Smith never ran a business and Karl Marx never administered a Gulag”

Because intellectuals work with ideas, they often overestimate the importance of conscious planning. They believe that just as they are able to devise solutions to their intellectual conundrums, so should society be guided by rational design. This view leads them to underestimate the potential of the free market, which relies on the dispersed intelligence of millions of people, coordinated through prices. Sowell, with characteristic skill at apt quotation, cites a number of remarks that show this attitude toward planning: “John Dewey, for example, spelled it out: ‘Having the knowledge we may set hopefully at work upon a course of social invention and experimental engineering.’ But the ignored question is: Who—if anybody—has that kind of knowledge

i acknowledge this is a print forum however i feel the above quotations (source -http://www.independent.org/publications/tir/article.asp?a=812) are a perfect fit to this thread, (i do appreciate the latitude extended to publishing this post)

Back in the late 90's, there was a printer in Toronto that was taken to the Human rights Commission. He was fined $5000 for refusing to print something for an organisation that he believed when against his religious beliefs. Google Scott Brockie loses decision at Court of Appeals. According to the article he ran up $40,000 in legal bills.

Well now in Canada, if you accidentally use the wrong pronoun and misgender a person, you can be brought before that same commission and be jailed and fined. Also you can't even criticize Islam.

You think Trump is bad? Trudeau is taking away your freedom right before your eyes.

It might do if you considered this man as representative of 'white people in the UK', and you considered being held accountable for harassing innocent women as being bullied.

A little insight for you, from a white Englishman... he isn't, and it isn't.

I understand that. People think America is hugely racist. It isn't. There are approx. 3000-6000 white supremacist in America, but they get all the media attention. I guess whats disturbing for some of us Americans is that in the UK people can simply be arrested for things like this. I would be extremely upset if someone could be arrested in America for their social media post because that would mean silencing from the government about your views, whether they might be racist, socialist, communist, capitalist, or any number of things. Don't think that I'm a supporter of racism, I'm far from it, but I do realize that in order to protect free speech, all people need to be protected, whether it is offensive or highly supportive speech.

While I may laugh at a business later for not wanting to (in this case, print) for (in this case, an LGBT cause), I would simply say OK to them and leave. I am quite certain there are plenty of other establishments who would welcome the business. To the one that said no, I would view them as a roadblock and need to find another way to get the job done.
