Printing on edge of a perfect bound book

Hi All,

I have a customer looking into doing a big (about 400 page) perfect bound booklet. He has a sample from another competitor where there is black imprinting on the "edge" of the paper. By edge, I mean the edge of the paper opposite to the spine.

Does anybody know someone in Los Angeles (or just SoCal) that can do this?

Thank you in advance.

Try using a black spray paint? Clamp the book so not to over spray into it and just spray the edge? Could be a manual way around?

I suspect that you could do with a pad printer, ask around the promo or ad specialty community, if qty kind of small and just line-work someone should be able to do it...
