I was using a polyester plate and have a problem with the image the first half inch of the image is smeared. I had a metal plate made and the same problem.the lower part of the image prints fine. Wonder if I could lower the image and rid myself of this problem. Any thoughts?

Can you post more details, which press is it and a pic of the problem will be helpful too.

toko 4750, the press says it's a multilith 1218. will post pic soon, i'm thinking that the image may be too far up on the plate. i took the blanket off and there was some packing under it that was wrinkled, i took it out and then tried it. same problem. thanks

Like all good stories, lets us start at the beginning...............

!) Is the plate mounted correctly on the plate cylinder --- at the Grip/Lead Edge ?

2) With the Inkers/Dampeners ON --- roll-up the Plate.

3) Is the Grip/Lead Edge............. "Catching-up/Scumming" ?

Regards, Alois

Thanks for replying, i checked the blanket and it seemed tight, but i had taken the blanket off and there was some packing sorta bunched up at he lead edge, so i took the packing out and tried it again, a friend told me to check the buckle adjustment, well.... the toko 4750 (Multi 1218) doesn't have a buckle adjustment knob, toko repairmen say it doesn't need one. So i checked the service manual and there was an adjustment, you have to loosen two screws and adjust two excentric bolts to adjust each side, I raised the feed wheel assembly to the weakest point and then ran some more envelopes and the image is a LOT better. But i can still see a hint of the smearing. Like you I wonder if the blanket with about 6 sheets of packing has stretched. Thanks Robert

1. yes
2. did that
3. there was no scumming, the lead edge of the plate was clean, the image was close to the lead edge, i lowered the "plate" by putting the plate in the clamp instead on the pin bars and gained about 1/4 inch and that made no difference , both polyester and metal plates had the same problem.

Pic sorry for the bad pic, if you look where it says "We" that's where the smear is.

Robert Cater,

What you are seeing is ............. Doubling - NOT smearing.

The Sheet prematurely slaps against the Blanket on entering the Nip, this results in

weak transfer of ink from the Blanket slightly out of register.

1) Check Blanket Tension -- OK ?

2) Problem with the Press Infeed Mechanism ?

I backed off on the buckle and it seemed to help a lot am going to put a new blanket on. Should a small press like this need packing under the blanket? I have ran ab dicks, ryobis, multi's etc. and never needed to pack the blanket.

Is it possible to flip the plate around and print the tail edge first, and possibly providing more room at the gripper? Its a WAG but I have seen this solve an issue in the past.

We had a problem with a chief 17 similar to this . . . it was solved by shimming the impression trip link piece so any play was removed, it seemed that for the first few sheets after a restart would double and then it would settle in. Check for play in your impression actuating system.
