Recommendations for Large Format Printer

Made in Taiwan

New member
Hey everybody!

I'm thinking about getting into large format printing. My current employer is currently outsourcing all of our large format printing and I think, he would be likely to give this work to me. It's not super much, but it'd be a basic income and could help me survive at least the first time.

Well now, here are my questions:

- Is there any printer you could recommend? I'm thinking about purchasing a 60in. wide LFP so it can cover all of our current jobs. (If it'd OK for you, maybe you could share some experiences about the ink consumption or maintenance of your printer with me.)
I have taken a look at the Canon ImagePrograf iPf9400 and it seems to be a nice and not too expensive machine. But I don't know if anybody has better recommendations.

- I'm also looking for a laminator, any recommendations? Would you suggest to buy one with built-in heater or is it not worth it?

Thanks a lot in advance for your answers!

Oh, by the way: Since this is my first post, I also want to briefly introduce myself. Originally I'm from Germany, but a few years ago I got married to a wonderful Taiwanese girl and did the big move to Taiwan. Currently I'm working as prepressprinteroperatorbinderyfinsishingsalesandclientservice specialist in a small digital print shop, all of our large format and offset printing is outsourced. Now I'm thinking about taking the chance and open my own small business.

It depends upon what you are printing. If it's going to be mostly outdoor stuff- banners, vehicle graphics, signs, etc., you'd be better off looking at a solvent ink printer like Mutoh, Mimaki and even Epson has some (there are many more manufacturers). The Canon imagePROGRAF is an aqueous ink that is more suited for indoor printing- fine art, posters, table top displays, etc. I have an imagePROGRAF w8400. It's 8 years old but still makes me money. There are adhesive vinyls and banner vinyls for it but they MUST be laminated if you want it to last longer than 3 months outside. For laminating, I use Daige Quickmount a cold roll laminator (pressure sensitive adhesive laminate).
