Ricoh C5503 Nightmare

Hi Folks,

I'm hoping some people can provide me with some insight.

I have a Ricoh C5503, it's about 2 months old. It doesn't get a heck of a lot of use, but it soon will for printing calendars, annual reports, etc.

I am having 2 major issues with this unit:

1. Front-back Registration. Not even close I understand there may be some error, but when printing 12x18 I'm looking at 2-3mm, sometimes more. This makes trimming our reports and calendars exceptionally difficult. our reports and I am tried adjusting it in the service menu but to no avail (I also can't seem to get ahold of the service manual so I know just what the heck it is I'm adjusting..)
2. Color Calibration. Is it normal to have to print and calibrate all 5 resolutions every day? The unit has less than 1000 colour impressions on it! I'm always seeing a hair of magenta of cyan, particularly from colour/rich black to white.

This unit is under a service agreement, but the techs are slow inconclusive. While I don't expect perfection, I certainly expect at least the colour to be printed accurately. If it helps I'm printing on blazer gloss 100lb cover and 80lb text.

I came from another Ricoh machine that was an absolute nightmare, and we were promised this one is so much better. Thus far, I'm simply not seeing it.

Thank you very much for replying. Yes the entry level machine 5503.

When we first got it a bunch of parts had to be replaced due to lines appearing in the print. Yellow turned out to be the culprit and they had to replace a part that was on backorder.

I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it?

Also, do you know if I can order a service manual for it? I find I have to makea bunch of small adjustments, especially to the finisher (staple position, foldposition, etc) and nothing really defines some of the settings.

Thanks again for your reply.

Mike:

There is no "entry" level machine. The "light" production system is the MP C5100s and the MP C5110s. If someone told you it was "entry" level then they were fibbing.

I would say that the difference that you are seeing in the registration is normal for that unit. As to having to calibrate 5 to 6 times a day, that is not normal.

The MP C5503 is a business color system, in fact there is one system higher in speed with the same engine. It is the MP C6003 (60 ppm).

You need to get rid of the 5503 ASAP and get the MP C5100s or MP C5110s.

Basically I showed the sales guy what we intended to print on this machin, annual reports and calendars. We had typically outsourced this but we had such a terrible experience last year that we decided to bring it in, I mentioned this when we were in the buying process.

He certainly made it seem that any other printer was far beyond the needs of our organization, or would cost 3-4x as much.

I'm sure that I can make the printer work for our need, if it burns out before it's scheduled end of life then too bad, they will have to replace or service it.

If you're looking for a service manual to do your own adjustments, then you'll probably be surprised when the servicing center tells you they won't replace it when it burns out because you were tinkering with the system. Am I reading this correct, that you are into the service mode and making your own adjustments??

Wish I could help with more.

That's righT. If It didn't take four days for a service person to come out and adjust it then by all means I would have them adjust it. Thus far I have only modified the staple and fold position as this is the only thing that is clear to me. There is an option for duplex registration in mm but IL have been unable to determine what axis it is adjusting.

Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
