Short run embossing

I was wondering if anybody knows of any new advancements in embossing technologies. I have a client that wants to potentially emboss greeting cards but they want more of an ondemand solution so numbers are relatively small...100-200 at a time. There could potentially be a library of 100 cards or so.

Are there any economical ways of doing this out there aside from conventional dies, setups etc?
