Stand Alone Trapping Software

Any recommendations for Stand Alone Trapping Software. We need trapped vector PDFs to send to a customer but our XMF workflow only outputs raster PDFs with trap.

The software I'm finding for trapping needs to use a RIP. I'm sure there's something out there than can trap PDFs on its own? And does it well.

If you are looking for a stand alone PDF editor that has automated trapping then look at Packz. It is native PDF so your files will not be rasterized or any other non native PDF flavor.

InDesign's trapper only works if you are outputting separated PostScript (unless they changed something in later versions).

In InDesign CS6 and a few earlier versions, when you print your trapped file, in the output tab select PostScript File as Printer; In-Rip Separations in Color; and, Application Built-In in Trapping. After saving the file distill in Distiller and you will have a composite PDF file with traps.

There are very limited options out there and they are not exactly cheap. As you have noted, this has become part of overall workflow software or RIPs.

Heidelberg Prinect also has a stand alone PDF trapping option for Acrobat – PDF Toolbox.

Generally the cost of these solutions price them out of the market and raster traps are then acceptable.

Is it possible that you can not get vector trapped PDF out of XMF?
I mean could there be setting or something that you missed, any other XMF users that might help?

So I take it that the trapping in InDesign is not robust for your trapping needs? It reminds me of Trapwise, an extinct program that I used ages ago to trap most of our flexo files.

XMF will not produce vector traps, it's one of the reasons we didn't buy it. Neo from Esko is the best PDF editor I have seen (and used). It will do local or global trapping with ease. Bring your big wallet though!

There is not many pdf editors that I know of that will do trapping.
Esko is about or just launched a new Pdf editor ArtPro +.
And then you have PackZ. Its probably good too, but I have never tried it.
Esko has a few older editors that handles pdf's that might be interesting.
Packedge and NEO.

ArtPro+ has been out for 2 years. And trapping is not automated.
