Tail edge ink build-up

Title pretty much says it all. I have many clients experiencing extreme ink build-up on the tail edge of their blankets. Starting in around 5000 sheets and getting worse from there. Also transfering to back cylinders. Anyone else seeing this? If so were you able to solve it? Many manufacturers involved now including plates, ink, fount, Heidelberg etc... Any thoughts boys???

Ink and fount. Is it all colors or just magenta? Magenta usually shows any defects in chemistry first.

First, check with the pre press dept. to see if their chemistry is up to snuff. Try developing and gumming a set of plates by hand to eliminate this variable.

Then try keeping current fount and switch ink brands. If it still happens check fount mixture. Some founts are buffered and may read a normal PH level but could be overdosed and breaking down the ink. The alcohol sub can also cause this problem. One step or two step fount?Try reducing the sub and remixing the fount with small amounts of fountain concentrate, checking and adding until the desired PH level is reached.
Water temp and roller temp play a big part also. Do you have chilled rollers? If not, no matter what you do you are fighting a losing battle.

Ink tack and flow can also be a culprit with higher press speeds. Try a higher tack or heavier body ink.

Before you try anything, the press rollers should be washed with a calcium remover.
I am also assuming the plates and blankets are packed properly and the rollers are set and in good shape.

ink build up at tail of plate

ink build up at tail of plate

Over 90% of the time it is the plate is loose!
Check blanket too.
Or are we talking about framing? Plate edges also? Any where sheet is taking off ink and water. Then it would be chemistry or Ink viscosity or contamination as prviously mentioned.
Good luck!

Can you cut the Blanket underpacking sheets to just inside sheet measurements, yes its a pain in the you know what if you are changing stock sizes 10 times a day but if your not then it might help.

One thing I have found many times is if you are oscillating any of the form rollers this will build up at the tail edge. Usually tone half way on the plate. Many pressman leave the oscillating forms on all the time and it will cause what you are describing. Let us know how this is resolved.

This would cause the framing problem!
Ink build up where ever sheet isn't taking off ink and water!

Hi,
we have faced the same problem, which was solved after modification in bender & setting of damp roller on plate was also incresed.
