That is so right on the money. I worked for a country newspaper owned by some big company years ago. I forget what it was, but there was some special project coming up, and the district manager decided that the only ones to work on it would be the department managers because they were all on salary. No overtime pay.

It's the same across most industries - not just a print thing. And it often happens to people at a stage in their life where they are dependent on that significant overtime income to top up an average hourly wage.

I was bumped to Production Manager at a couple of different work places. I was given an increase in pay, but exactly as Gords' cartoon states, no overtime pay.
However it did give me freedom to move about the shop, get out to see suppliers etc. and generally free reign to do a lot of what I pleased. This worked for me as I was never much one to stand in 1 location 8 hours a day doing essentially the same thing.
One place gave me a car allowance in lieu of a raise. There was a tax benefit to this.
Biggest downside was being in the middle between employees & management.

I concur. Being in middle-management sucks. Trying to appease those below you and those above you at the same time.

there is a simple solution: you say when I am in front of the work force I am management's man putting over your concerns, but when I am in front of management I am the work force's man putting over their concerns. You let both parties know this, clearly, FORCEFULLY. Otherwise your life will be hell.

If you play the " management's man" while in front of the work force, they will not accept you as one of their own: "You're management. You have no idea what we have to go through."

If you play the "work force's man" in front of management, then, you're not a "company man". No further advancement for you!
