What difference does 1mm make on the length of a Web Plate?

Hi All, this is my first post.

I have a customer who is running a Solna Web press, he needs a specific size plate and the one that i can supply him is 1mm too long for his requirements. Is this 1mm going to cause a problem with the press if I supply it?

It is not the bredth of the plate that is incorrect but the length or side that goes around the circumference of the drum. I've been told that it will cause a registration problem on the press. Please will someone explain this too me.

Manufacturers spec on plates are a minimum of +/- 1mm and up to +/- 3mm depending on size and type of plate. No manufacturer will guarantee more than that. All the presses i have dealt with have more than 1 mm of room in the tail clamp. if the tail of the plate isn't punched it would be much more.

It may not be so much the press, but it could be the plate punch that is a tight fit for anything over the spec'd size.
We use one here that punches and bends the plates for our web presses. Our web guys bitch incessantly if the plates are too big.

Yes, a 1mm longer plate on a Web Offset Press could cause problems, the Trailing Edge of the Plate might not fit in the Plate Lock Up.

If the plates are too long then get with your supplier and see if they have a shorter plate.

We run a Solna press and oversize plates are a major issue. The bender still bends in the same place so the lip that slots into the press is too long. This prevents the plate from seating properly (it protrudes a fraction of an inch). It will run fine for around 5000 impressions but it will then crack as it's been bashed every revolution.

We use Kodak plates and every time we see a cracked plate the first thing we check is size - they will invariably be slightly too big. I have no idea if this is specific to Solna presses (I work in Pre Press not on the press) but it has been a significant problem here. Fortunately the supply from Kodak has been great - it 7 years we've seen it maybe 4 or 5 times.
