How? When at GraphExpo, their demo prints looked worse than a desktop inkjet.

For those that have seen samples from Kodak Stream inkjet which uses optimized paper, or the HP web press which puts down it's own selective bonding agent (coating) both these machines blow away the other inkjets be it Kodak Versamark, Screen Jet520, or Oce JetStream. It's all about optimization of the stock. I've ran samples on 20# bond and 24# optimized stock and they look completely different on the Riso. I'm not trying to say you can get offset or toner digital quality but it does get a lot better if the ink doesn't dive into the stock.

I have an annual meeting with them in January and will be asking for these types of samples to understand just how good we can get it and then determine what the price penalty on the stock is to see if it truly makes since.

Well, using a stock that needs a bonding agent is OK, but it is too limiting. Should my clients want Classic Crest or Howard Linen stock I need to give them that option. Offset printing definitely works and from what I can see so does the Xante Ilumina. I have talked to Xante regarding this issue and I am waiting to get an official response. The unofficial response has been there is no problem with there toner melting or building up when going through another laser printer.

How do the Illumina prints look on a linen or laid stock? Do they have the same mottled look as any other toner device, or does it get into the grooves like offset?

Craig,

I can answer the Linen stock question: it prints rather well, much better than I thought it would. I ran a job on Classic Linen cover yesterday with a 100% black solid; I found that this did not do well so I created a rich black of 80%each of the CMYK and it came out great. We then scored the job and folded along part of the solid the toner did crack a little, but not as bad as I've seen other toner devices crack.

As for laid stocks and stocks that are toothier, well there is some mottled effect more than in offset printing, but my clients have accepted the work. I have a high end wedding invitation client and she provides very toothy thick stocks (felts, etc.) with heavy coverage for maps of wedding sites and she has been ecstatic with the results. Her maps have recently been featured in wedding magazine; she claims that our printing has helped improve that line of work she does--all done on the Ilumina.
