Soft Touch (feel) Aqueous Coating

I'm looking for some information and pointers running soft touch aqueous coating. I've ran several press test that have all been successful, however problems ensue during longer production runs. The viscosity on this stuff is around 50 seconds through a #2 zahn, yeah it's like glue. I'm running it using a Harris & Bruno anolix coating unit with a 200 line 8.6 bcm anolix roll. The major issue that I'm having seems to be foaming. I believe that the coating is being agitated from the anilox roll and then not getting into the cells thus causing voids. The voids alway show up on the gear side, opposite the fill side of the chamber. Any help would be appreciated!

What do you mean by "soft touch" aqueous coating? I've heard of gloss, satin, dull, heat sealable, but what is this?

It's an aqueous coating that gives the sheet a soft and velvet feel. It's really hot in our market!!

We had the same problem with different cell depths. The old product had silicone in it. It is drying in the cells. We are testing a new product soon.
Fill the chamber and let it circulate before testing.

This is a coating that will make the paper feel like velvet. I have seen Golf Courses printed with it and it feels soft when you touch it. If you have an extended delivery on your press anyone can apply it as it is just like applying an AQ. caoting. At Midwest Ink, we sell this to many printers. The you viscosity mentioned on the Softfeel coating is way too high. I do have product that will take care of the issue that is tried and true in other pressrooms. Please call me.

is this coating only offered in matte or can you get it in gloss or satin?

My experience with the soft touch coating is that it produces a very Matte finish, far more even than regular Matte coatings. Never seen it other than in Matte.

So, did you get this sorted out by anyone, or figure it out on your own? Did you have to change your coating supplier or use a larger roller? We had great success when we started with soft touch, about 2 years ago, but not so much as of late. Who makes a good soft feel coating?

I'm having the same problems.
I'm changing my roller to a 12 bcm 250 line
Thats what the manufacturer reguired.
I was not applying enough coating.

Thanks for all of your replies. I have recently changed companies and am working on a ManRoland again. Funny thing is that it has no problems with soft touch. Having said that, it does have 4 different sizes of anilox rollers, capping out at 25 BCM. Just had to play with the pressures and squeeze and presto!! Cheers to all.

A client would like to use soft touch on a postcard but is concerned with scratching as there is no envelope to protect the card. If one has experience with this, I would love to hear. thx.

Yes Maralyn, that is one of the problems with soft touch coating. It will scratch or scuff a bit. If giving enough time to cure will lessen the effect though. Good luck. If anyone has better info, of maybe a different product, pls feel free time chime in!

We have had great luck with Wikoff Coating... They recommend a 12-14 bcm anilox roller but we have found that a double hit of the 8.5 bcm roller gives a better "rubbery" soft feel. That viscosity seems a bit high but you should probably run what the manufacturer tells you.
