Gradients in Illustrator

Can anyone explain to me the difference between creating a gradient over another object that goes from 100% Black to 0% Black (using the opacity slider) and creating a Black to white gradient and setting it to multiply? Visually I cannot detect a difference. Am I missing something?

Model it.
Create an 11 step stepwedge that goes from 100% Cyan to white in 10% increments.
Create one gradient that goes from 100% Black to 0% Black (using the opacity slider).
Cover 1/2 of the 11 step stepwedge with that gradient.
Create a Black to white gradient and set it to multiply
Cover 1/2 of the 11 step stepwedge with that gradient.

If there is a difference you should see it and where it occurs.
