Duplo DC-618 Slot 2 Making Weird Noise

Hello all,

Does anybody know what could be causing the noise coming from Slot 2? This has been happening for the past few days. Occasionally, the cutter stops stating "Slot 2 - L lock." It also only seems to happen when the slitter is returning to the home position.

take the module out and run both slitters to the edges looking for a bind?? when reinstalling is the module sitting on the2 pins and locking knobs easy to screw down??

Definitely take the slot2 module out and inspect it. IIRC, "L lock" error typically relates to the Duplo's sensors being unable to confirm that the mechanism has rotated properly into its home (locked) position. That combined with the fact that it only is making this noise on the return stroke indicates you likely have a problem with the bearing assembly, in my opinion. Take it out and look closely at the linear guide rails (the rails everything moving travels along). Look for paper dust buildup and lack of lubrication, evidence of friction, etc. I would clean it off as best I could with a lint free rag and mild solvent, and then add some lithium-based grease (without solid additives). However most manufacturers recommend different lubrication types, and I don't have a Duplo service manual so I'm not sure if they recommend lithium-based or not.

I removed the module and found that there was some friction near the home position. Do you have any brand recommendations for what you use on your machine? I will try to find something else online, but Duplo never makes it easy to find this kind of information from past experience.

I usually put a bit of light oil on the worm gears as grease tends to gum up from the paper dust. For the most part I leave the shafts dry so nothing sticks to them.

you can try using spray lubricant like wd40.... it has proved useful to us in the past
WD-40 is NOT LUBRICANT. It was created as a Water Displacement liquid for the inside of rocket fuel chambers.
Any lubrication that happens evaporates soon after use.
Sure - it stops the squeak until it wears/evaporates and then it allows much more wear to occur before you notice the squeak again IF the part doesn't fail completely.
Sigh.

Do you have any reccomendations on what I should use? We have a contact at Duplo, but they're going to want to charge us $200 to send a tech to NV from CA just to apply lubricant.

$200 sounds very reasonable to me. While the tech is there you can find out what kind of oil and grease they’re using. They may give you a few free tips on maintaining it if you’re lucky.

The 618 is easy to work with. The modules come out and can be worked on with ease. Clean off the worm screws and dribble some oil where the shafts go thru the plastic nut on top of the head. Work it back n forth your done. You dont need anything special just not a runny oil. Even something like press/hydraulic oil is fine.
