Dirt on the Lower Fuser Roller (Xerox Versant)

For those that are familiar with Xerox machines…

We have a Versant 80 and it’s leaving black marks on prints. We have recently fitted a new fuser belt assembly so know that’s all good and a tech we know said it sounded like the lower fuser pressure roller starting to disintegrate so we replaced that last Friday.

Fast forward to today and it’s doing the same thing again. Took out the fuser belt assembly and theres loads of black bits caked on the lower pressure roller again. I’ve managed to clean most of it off so I don’t think it’s actually the roller disintegrating again.

I was just wondering whether it could just be crap floating around in the machine or is there another roller before the lower fuser roller that could be disintegrating and getting caught by the lower roller?

it's the "Teflon" (or what ever it is) coating coming off the roller... I see this quite often on our V4100s. Performing a fuser cleaning under [Tools] >> [Clean Fuser Assembly] on bond (preferably) stock, on as large of stock you have. Repeat cleanings until all sheets are clean.

Will it ‘settle’ then after doing that?

The company I got the roller from have been excellent so far but I don’t want to get it replaced if it’s not actually an issue as such.

"settle"? well, once the coating is gone, it won't come off any more on your prints.

Yes but what I meant was surely the coating is there for a reason so if the coating comes off, will the pressure roller continue to function correctly?

Not sure if this is connected - but several years ago a Xerox engineer gave us a load of these felt pads to keep the fuser clean on our V180. They literally just slide into the back of the fuser. Certainly seem to work!

We had them at one point on our V80 but if I remember it caused other marks and they were removed shortly after, maybe they didn't install them correctly on ours.
