RIT School of Printing - 1977 Courses

In 1976, Steve Suffoletto (Buffalo, NY) became a freshman at Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) in the College of Graphic Arts & Photography (GAP), in the School of Printing. There were about 700 students. Classes were 10 week-long tri-semesters. Below is a list for courses offered in...

Quadient Mach 7 Registration and colour matching

A dE =<4.0 should be acceptable for uncoated envelope printing. Do you have a colorimeter or spectrophotometer for dE or just a densitometer? I think both of your devices are HP inkjet? Are they controlled by a Raster Image Processor (RIP) or Digital Front End (DFE)? If so, that software should...

Quadient Mach 7 Registration and colour matching

Regarding color, do you have an instrument to measure dE? Is this regarding matching brand Pantone logo colors? A dE of 10 is very LARGE!

    Paper Smoothness/Roughness

"Ra" roughness value is provided by an instrument called a Profilometer. Some can also provide the topography profile curve. Most printers probably don't have this, but paper and blanket mfg should.

Are you talking about the vertical line on the yellow background toward the right? Or are you talking about the fuzz below the letters?

    Paper Smoothness/Roughness

Hoping for data from a contact profilometer (diamond tip stylus) that shows X-height variation over distance. Provide numeric value of Roughness with Ra value, in microns (um). Sheffield uses escaping air flow (porosity) through paper fiber pores. An X/Y scatter diagram of that vs Ra would also...

ricoh pro c9110 thin black line problem

Please define what you think the "problem" is? Are you talking about the edge definition of black type? It's been screened, perhaps to show a drop shadow artistic design?

Also, a visual would also be great to support it.

    Paper Smoothness/Roughness

Hello PrintPlanet, Do any of the paper people have any data they can share about this? Ra is a metric of surface finish and its unit is 1 micron (um).

Ink piles up on the edge of the water pan roller.

For troubleshooting and problem solving for root-cause analysis, it's helpful to compare and contrast, this vs that, before vs after. Is it happening only with one unit/color? Is it happening only on one side (gear-drive or button-operator) If chrome roller is not hydrophilic (desensitized), it...

Calibrating Older press for Digital Proofing

Well, matching a press sheet to a hardcopy proof is one thing, but matching it to a soft proof computer screen/display is something else! You'll need an ICC profile to color manage your RGB display to match your CMYK press.

Calibrating Older press for Digital Proofing

"Currently navigator tells the canon to print to gracol standard but on some prints ( typically blues and purples ) the canon output does not match the digital proof and is not within a tolerance to be usable as a judge of color for our offset pressmen." You confused me when you said the "canon...

Posterisation in reprint despite identical image files

Maybe you can send them a gray scale (continuous or stepped, 0-255 GL or 0-100% dot), have them print it, and then you will see the effects of their tone reproduction curve (compression, bumps, cutback, clips)?

Posterisation in reprint despite identical image files

For this example, I prefer the 2nd print on the left, it has some shadow detail. The first print on the right has no shadow detail. An image with a 10 gray scale pixel would be about a 96% dot size. A traditional sheetfed offset litho press would probably reproduce this as 100% (plug up, fill...

Grand format Dye sub blue prints turned purple after 3 months

Sounds like ultraviolet (UV) in natural sunlight is burning out (fugitive) the yellow colorant, dye. Is your printer colorants lightfast for outdoor usage, 72 hrs of exposure is typical.
